What is HAZCOM 2025?

HAZCOM 2025 represents a significant revision of the Hazard Communication Standard. To improve the consistency and clarity of hazard communication in the workplace, OSHA is adopting elements from GHS Revision 7 and select provisions from Revision 8.

The updates aim to enhance worker protection by improving how chemical hazards are classified and communicated, especially through Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and labeling.

  • Updated Classification Criteria: Adjustments to the classification of flammable gases, aerosols, desensitized explosives, and chemicals under pressure.


  • Revised Labeling Standard:
     - New guidelines for small container labeling.
    - Requirements for label updates after shipment.
    - Expanded data requirements on shipped labels.


  • Modified SDS Format and Content: SDSs must include more comprehensive details on physical hazards, environmental impacts, and toxicological data.


  • Terminology and Definitions: Refinements and additions to definitions for improved clarity and reduced risk of misinterpretation.

This is not a minor revision; it’s a strategic overhaul affecting nearly every component of a company’s chemical safety program. Employers should begin taking the following actions:
